Question |
Answer |
What age range is considered “teens” for these classes? |
Our youth classes are designed for young people aged 13-16 years old. |
Does my young person need any prior martial arts experience? |
No, we welcome complete beginners! Our structured curriculum allows our young people to start at any level and progress at their own pace. |
How often should my high schooler attend classes? |
For optimal progress, we recommend attending 2-3 sessions per week. However, even attending once weekly will provide benefits. |
What should my high schooler wear to class? |
For the first few classes, comfortable athletic clothing (t-shirt and shorts/track pants) is fine. If they continue, we recommend purchasing a proper BJJ gi. |
Are the classes co-ed or separated by gender? |
Our classes are co-ed, but we ensure all training is conducted with appropriate supervision and respect. |
How does BJJ compare to other martial arts? |
BJJ is excellent for youth because it provides a full-body workout, teaches practical self-defense, and develops problem-solving skills through the “physical chess” aspect of the sport. |
Is BJJ safe for youth? |
Yes, safety is our top priority. Our classes have qualified instructors, appropriate supervision ratios, and we teach proper techniques to prevent injuries. |
Will BJJ help with my young person’s confidence and discipline? |
Absolutely. BJJ helps build confidence through measurable skill progression and creates discipline through consistent practice and focus. |
How long does it take to earn the first belt promotion? |
Most teens can expect their first promotion (white belt with a stripe) within 3-6 months of consistent training. Belt progressions follow a structured system based on skill development, not simply time. |
Can parents watch the classes? |
Yes, we have a designated viewing area where parents can observe classes. We also host regular parent information sessions and demonstration days. |
Are there competitions my teenager can participate in? |
Yes, we regularly participate in local and regional BJJ tournaments. Competition is encouraged but entirely optional based on the student’s comfort level and goals. |
How are teen classes different from adult classes? |
Teen classes place greater emphasis on fundamentals, proper technique, and controlled training. The intensity is appropriately scaled, and there’s more focus on character development alongside technical skills. |
What physical benefits can my young person expect? |
Regular BJJ training improves cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness. Many teens also experience improved posture and weight management. |
How do you handle bullying or negative behavior in class? |
We maintain a strict zero-tolerance policy for bullying. Our classes promote respect, cooperation, and positive peer relationships. Instructors actively monitor interactions and address any concerns immediately. |
Are there opportunities for leadership development? |
Yes, as our young people progress, they can participate in our leadership program, assisting with younger classes and developing valuable teaching and leadership skills. |
